Following the recent arrest of a Pomona College professor for “trespassing” on the campus on which they work, there has been a storm of backlash accusing Pomona of racial profiling and violating academic freedom. Thankfully, in Gabby Starr’s new statement, she puts these accusations to bed by announcing that the professor is “just teaching an inside out class.” Whew!
Starr went on to state that “Pomona wholeheartedly supports the rights of our professors to teach whatever they want – it’s just that if they’re going to teach politics that are directly at odds with our material interests, they do it to people who can’t vote.”
Starr also deftly addressed the allegations of racism: “Pomona doesn’t have a ‘racial profiling’ problem. We have a shared ancestry discrimination problem, and we are doing everything we can to fight it. I’m sending out a whole new email every week! What more do you want from me?”
We also spoke to Campus Safety about how they handled the situation, and they clarified that the arrest was entirely unrelated to the pro-Palestine protests occurring on campus. “This had absolutely nothing to do with his political views. We would have called the police on any brown man on campus regardless of what they were protesting.”
