On This Day In History: 9/11/2001

On today’s date in 2001, two towers fell. Beams collapsed, windows shattered, hearts battered.

While you might expect our publication to make light of this, we believe that “making light” of the Twin Towers is something best left to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s annual display. See thumbnail.

As each year passes, we grow more distant from the smoke and ashes. Yet we will never forget. The September 11 skyline of New York City at 8:46:39 AM is etched forever into our hearts. The New York City skylines on and after 8:46:40 AM, one second later that might as well have been a millennium, are also etched forever into our hearts, but as wounds. Chronic wounds, that will forever throb on this poignant anniversary, much like arthritis on rainy days, or Frodo’s stab wound from the Witch King of Angmar.

As famous New York City hip hop group the Beastie Boys said it best: “Since 9/11, we’re still living and loving life we’ve been given. Ain’t nothing going take that away from us. We’re looking pretty and gritty, because in the city we trust. Dear New York, I know a lot has changed. Two towers down, but you’re still in the game.”

This 9/11, reflect on the sacrifices people on all sides made in the name of this country. Even if you disagree with someone’s political views, today is a day for unity in honoring the dead. Unlike many, we know that today is not a time for tasteless jokes. Savor the peace in the world we have today.

Unlike the two towers, the co-writers of this memorial post weren’t willing to take a hit for their country.
