Starting Monday October 9th, the Motley Coffeehouse at Scripps College is implementing an exciting venture: happy hour! Aiming to foster a strong 5C community, the Motley is embracing the word “communal” to its fullest extent. On weekdays from 4:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., the Motley will host “take a sip, leave a sip.”
The co-heads of the shop—Mona Nucleos and Hailey Simplex—want to promote unity and a strong sense of one-ness. “We always noticed how much people love a communal table, and we figured we could take it to a new level,” said Nucleos.
When asked what “take a sip, leave a sip” means, Simplex responded, “It means whatever you want it to mean. If, for you, that means bringing a lukewarm mixture of opaque, grainy tap water and Hoch coffee from your room and taking a different one, that’s great. Your week-old separated Malott smoothie could be someone else’s dream drink.
If you see it as a “mama bird” situation, we couldn’t be happier about that.” Nucleos added, “Mama Birding is such a beautiful sight to behold, and it works for a sip or a bite. You really have never felt intimacy until you’ve seen and experienced it.”
“We live in polarizing times, and we feel it is our responsibility, as a coffee shop, to bridge the divide. It is much harder to be disconnected from someone who just spat an oat milk Matcha Cha Cha in your mouth,” said Simplex.
It wouldn’t be a true Motley experience without a theme, so “happy” will take the shop by storm with a playlist looping Happy by Pharrell Williams, Happiness by Taylor Swift, and an audio-only recording of people smiling.
Karlie Kloss once said, “happiness is… a warm cookie.” So next week, during the Motley’s “take a bite, leave a bite,” get a warm cookie to chew up and spit in someone’s mouth, and it truly will be a happy hour.
It is simple: hearts open, mouths open.
No rules, just the new Motley holy trinity: community, music, and regurgitation.
